We can no longer afford to neglect our social health
Our social health is determined by the extent to which our relationships meet our needs. An ever-growing body of evidence shows that our social health is critical to longevity, wellness, productivity, resilience and happiness.
We’ve never needed to focus on our social health more than now. The US Surgeon General has called social disconnection a public health crisis. Workplace conflict costs UK organisations tens of billions annually. Communities without functional relationships have no defence against ecological, political or economic hardships.
Yet we do next to nothing to protect our social health.
We treat the skills that support social fitness - like conflict navigation, listening, questioning, rapport building, repair work - as innate. They aren’t. We treat the practices and design choices that build social fitness as optional. That’s tragic.
